LORI FOSTER INTERVIEW / ENTREVISTA A LORI FOSTER

Welcome to Locas del Romance, Lori. Thank you for your time and your attention. We know you’re a very busy person and we’re really happy to have the chance to talk to you. We’ve followed your career for years and, without any doubt, you’re one of the writers who inspire us.

LORI FOSTER :Thank you so much, both for the invitation to chat, and the lovely compliments.

We’d like to make you some questions for our readers. If one of the questions makes you feel uncomfortable, please forgive us and overlook it.

LFThank you, but I’m sure all the questions are fine!

L.R. Just in case someone doesn’t know you (although this is impossible, for sure), how did you start in the world of romantic novel? How did you choose the name with which sign your work and why?

LF I had never really been much of a reader, but then I was sick once, and stuck in bed, and my sister brought me over a bag of romance novels. I no sooner started to read them than I was hooked. Shortly after becoming an avid reader, I decided I wanted to write. It took me writing 10 books and submitting them over a 5 year period before I finally sold.

The name I use is my own. My full name is Loretta, but my family always called me Lori for short. I work to hard to fob off my accomplishment on a pseudonym.

L.R. How did you describe yourself as a writer? Which three strengths and three weaknesses define you?

LF: I’m very motivated and hard working. I feel driven to write, and I’m happiest when I’m writing. I think my strengths are male point of view, humor, and characterization.

I’m weakest on plots - I have to work harder on that. And I have a tendency to reuse words, so I always ask my editor to check for repetition. Also, I have NO ability to title a book. That’s something I leave entirely to the editor.

L.R. One of the things that always attracts our attention is knowing the writers’ academic background , have you ever took a specific course for writers or is all about innate talent and hard work?

LF: :-) Actually, I married my husband right after high school. We’ve now been married over 35 years. I taught myself to write by writing. I’m a very hands-on person, and when someone is teaching me, I do better to *do* than to just listen. When I try to listen, my mind wanders. So no, no special writing classes.

L.R.  Talking about your work as a writer, which method do you follow to create these gems of romantic literature?

LF:  I’m a seat of my pants writer, meaning I make it up as I go along. Or more specifically, the characters make it up. I usually know who the hero and heroine is, and I know the opening scene. Because these are romances, I also know there will be sex and it’ll end happy. But that’s it. How they go from the beginning to the end is something the characters share with me as I write.

L.R. How is a day in Lori Foster’s life?

LF:  Week days are different from weekends.

Week days I’m usually up by 4:30 am. I like to use that time to drink my coffee, get awake, answer emails (or do interviews like this one) check my Facebook, etc... By around 8:30 to 9:00 am I’m ready to start laundry, get dressed, make the bed, that sort of thing. By 10 am I’m writing, and I generally write until at least 4pm, but often longer.

Weekends, when possible, are reserved for catching up on other things. I love to take in a movie with my husband, or do dinner out. Sunday is “family day” and my sons, with their significant others and my grandkids, have an open invitation. More often than not, they make it over to visit that day.

L.R. We suppose that, as a romance writer, you were an avid reader of the genre Tell us, which writer or book marked you in a special way? Which book is a reference (this one you can’t stop reading) for you nowadays?

LF:  I’m still in love with my older copies of books by Julie Garwood, Catherine Coulter, Johanna Lindsey, Linda Howard, and Jayne Ann Krentz. I reread those books, visiting them like old friends.

New authors I adore are Katie McGarry (she’s *amazing!*) and Jill Shalvis and Erin McCarthy (both very funny and sexy writers.) Oh, and I love Kresley Cole. She has the most engaging, unique characters with fabulous dialogue.

L.R. Which is your favorite of all the books you wrote until now?  Why?

LF:  One of my favorites is Causing Havoc, probably because it was the first MMA (mixed martial arts) heroes I wrote, and I’m a huge fan of the sport!

L. R.  Do you usually put famous people’s faces to your character or are they products of your imagination?

LF: Totally the product of my imagination. I can rarely remember the names of famous people, so it’d be difficult for me to assign physical characterizations to them. I get very strong visuals of what the characters should look like.

L. R. Could you talk about your actual projects? Some juicy release which comes out soon that you could share with us?

LF: Thank you! I actually have a lot of releases coming up. Readers can always see them on my website at: http://lorifoster.com/upcoming-releases/

Dash of Peril, the 4th book in my Love Undercover series, is out March 25th. This is a story for Dash (Logan’s brother in Run the Risk) and Lieutenant Margaret Peterson. I’m very hopeful that readers will enjoy it.

I have two reissues in May, Unexpected and Up In Flames.

In June I have a new “benefit book,” titled Back to Buckhorn, which will be part of my Buckhorn Brothers series. All proceeds from the sale of the book go to a local no-kill animal shelter.

August is a digital only prequel to my new series, Hard Knocks.

September is another reissue, Never Too Much, and also another new single title. No Limits (which I just recently finished writing) will be the first in my new Ultimate series. It features Cannon, who readers met in Getting Rowdy and Dash of Peril.

Up to here with our questions, Lori. We’re absolutely grateful for the time you spend to answer. We’ll follow your future works. Thank you for making us falling in love everyday with your characters and carrying us to worlds full of romance, love, and sexy and dangerous men.

From Locas del romance, we hope that everything you’ll work on brings you a great success and you continue fascinating us with your stories for many years.

Thank you so much for your collaboration. It was nice to meet you.

Love from Locas del Romance and see you soon!
